Cal’s offseason roster shuffling begins with guard Devin Askew and forward ND Okafor entering the transfer portal.

Coming out of Mater Dei, Askew was once ranked as the No. 26 overall prospect in the 2020 recruiting class according to ESPN.

Before joining the Bears, the California local spent his freshman year at Kentucky before transferring to Texas for his sophomore campaign.

In his two years with Cal, the offensive-minded Askew has dealt with two season-ending injuries — a sports hernia surgery in 2022-23 and a foot injury in 2023-24. He played in just 19 of 64 possible games.

Despite his injury-riddled career with the Bears, Askew had a strong collegiate season in 2022-23 when he started all 13 games he appeared in, averaging a team-leading 15.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. His 13.4 increase in points per game was second among all NCAA Division I players.

The fifth-year guard will be entering the transfer portal for the third time in his career to presumably join his fourth program in five seasons. Askew will enter next season with career averages of 6.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.

Tagging alongside Askew’s journey to the portal is sophomore forward, Okafor. Unlike Askew, Okafor’s decision Tuesday marks his first entrance into the transfer portal.

Okafor has spent his first season with Cal and like Askew, missed the majority of the 2023-24 season with an injury. In his freshman campaign, the 6-foot-9 forward led the Bears in blocks (21) and provided a reliable option off the bench. In 39 games, the Dundalk, Ireland product has averaged 3.3 points and 2.3 rebounds.
