Cal men’s basketball head coach Mark Madsen has agreed to sign a two-year contract extension with the program, Cal Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton announced today.

The extension will keep the first-year coach at Cal through the 2029-30 season.

“I'm fired up every day to be the head coach at Cal, and consider myself very fortunate to work alongside an outstanding group of student-athletes, coaches, staff and administrators who share the same relentless passion for success,” Madsen told Calbears.com.

Following a program-worst 3-29 season, Madsen was charged with revamping a depleted Cal roster.

In their first season with Madsen at the helm, the Bears went 13-18 overall and 9-11 in the Pac-12, their winningest conference campaign since the 2016-17 season. A 10-win improvement is something that Cal men’s basketball has yet to accomplish since the 1998-99 season.

The East Bay local has undoubtedly changed the culture at Cal. Madsen was keen to energize the Bears' fanbase since his hiring in March of last year, and he oversaw the first sell out at Haas Pavilion since 2017. He excelled at bringing talent in through the transfer portal with players such as Jaylon Tyson (who received All-Pac 12 First Team honors today), Fardaws Aimaq, Jalen Cone and Keonte Kennedy joining this past offseason and playing crucial roles in Cal’s turnaround season.

“Our goal is to win championships and pursue greatness, and our entire basketball program will continue to execute on that vision with the Cal community behind us. There are great things ahead in Bear Territory, and we're just getting started,” Madsen added.

Cal will have its first and final opportunity at a Pac-12 championship with Madsen this week, as it’s set to transition to a much more competitive conference in the ACC next season.
