Two-time transfer Jaylon Tyson will miss the 2023-24 season after being denied immediate eligibility. Cal’s appeal for Tyson’s eligibility is still in progress.
The NCAA informed Cal last week that its highest-rated transfer, junior guard Jaylon Tyson, will not be granted immediate eligibility for the 2023-24 season.
Cal immediately submitted an appeal for Tyson’s case, hoping to have their two-way guard ready ahead of their first game of the season.
Tyson, a two-time transfer, is coming off his first season as a starter where he averaged 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds, while shooting 48.3% from the field and 40.2% from three.
Tyson’s collegiate career began at Texas for the 2021-22 season, but after just half a season, he transferred to Texas Tech where he stepped into a larger role.
Shortly after Tyson’s transfer, former Texas Tech head coach Mark Adams resigned after making racist remarks to players. Tyson’s transfer to Cal came one month after Adams resigned.
“Last year, I was racially discriminated against on multiple occasions. I was called a slave, and that Mark Adams was my master,” Tyson said to Sports Illustrated. “(I) went down a dark path in my life that I had never (experienced) before.”
According to Sports Illustrated, neither Adams nor Texas Tech has refuted that racially insensitive remarks were made. Adams also says that the comments were in relation to a Bible verse.
The NCAA’s decision on Tyson’s appeal will set the precedent for what is to come for future two-time transfers.
“Because of what Jaylon experienced in previous situations … I was disappointed that the waiver was denied, (but) I’m very hopeful that upon appeal (Tyson) will be granted the waiver,” said Cal head coach Mark Madsen after practice last week.
If the original ruling stands, Tyson will only be eligible to return for the 2024-25 season. For now, the Bears are set to face St. Thomas without their 6’ 7” guard in their home opener.
